Against the Concept of Electoral College

Dear [Representative],

I am sick and tired of the being under-represented as a resident of California. I’ll show you the math and you tell me how this is a democracy for the people.  California has 55 electoral representatives with about 19,400,000 registered voters. This is a ratio of 352,000:1. Alaska has 3 electoral representatives with about 515,000 registered voters.  This is a ratio of 171,000:1. That means that a vote in Alaska is twice as important as a vote in California.

There’s another reason to get rid of the Electoral College, voters in states that aren’t in electoral “contention” are staying away from the voting in presidential elections. Turnout is relatively low in solidly Democratic or Republican states such as New York, California, Texas and Oklahoma compared to more “competitive” electoral states.  According to the Election Project, in 2016’s presidential election, 52.4 percent of eligible voters cast ballots in New York, 53.8% in California, 51.1% in Texas, and 52.1% in Oklahoma. In “competitive” states, turnout was significantly higher: Florida, 65.1%; Ohio, 64.5%; and New Hampshire, 70.3%.

One such critic of the electoral college in November 2012 was Donald Trump, who tweeted: "The electoral college is a disaster for democracy."

If you want to have a government for and by the people, let each vote count equally.

Sincerely,
